Aucun chiffre de ce site n'est une estimation à vue d'œil. Ils sortent tous d'un modèle publié, et voici lequel, avec ce qu'il sait et ce qu'il ne sait pas.
Géométrie solaire
La position du soleil est calculée avec les équations standard de déclinaison et d'angle horaire : pour une latitude, une longitude et un jour de l'année, l'élévation solaire à chaque instant. C'est de là que viennent le lever, le coucher, le crépuscule civil et la durée du jour. C'est de l'astronomie, pas de la statistique : cela ne dépend pas du temps qu'il fait.
Indice UV par ciel clair
L'UV est estimé avec le modèle de Madronich (2007), corrigé de l'ozone saisonnier d'après van Heuklon. L'ozone compte parce que c'est précisément lui qui absorbe l'UVB quand le soleil est bas, et c'est ce régime qui décide s'il existe un hiver sans vitamine D. Les pages de ville et de mois utilisent ce modèle par ciel dégagé : les nuages ne peuvent que réduire ces valeurs. Votre tableau de bord quotidien, lui, affiche l'indice UV des prévisions réelles d'Open-Meteo, qui intègrent déjà la nébulosité.
Synthèse de la vitamine D
À partir de l'UV, on calcule la dose érythémateuse minimale selon le phototype de Fitzpatrick, ajustée selon l'âge et la surface de peau exposée. Le résultat, ce sont les minutes nécessaires pour une dose cible. C'est une estimation de population, pas un diagnostic.
Les deux seuils
La synthèse exige un indice UV d'au moins 3. La hauteur que le soleil doit atteindre pour y parvenir n'est pas une constante : elle dépend de l'ozone au-dessus de vous, qui varie avec la latitude et la saison. Le site calcule cette élévation pour chaque lieu et chaque jour, d'environ 29° là où la couche d'ozone est la plus fine à environ 42° là où elle est la plus épaisse. Un seuil fixe était utilisé auparavant, et c'est précisément cette simplification qui a causé l'erreur corrigée en juillet.
Ce que ce modèle ne sait pas
Il ne sait pas s'il y a des nuages au moment où vous regardez. Il ne tient compte ni de l'ombre des bâtiments ou des montagnes, ni de la réflexion de la neige ou de l'eau, qui peut augmenter l'exposition de façon notable. Il traite la peau comme une surface plane orientée vers le ciel. Et il décrit une personne moyenne de chaque phototype, pas vous : les médicaments, la grossesse, l'âge avancé et plusieurs maladies modifient la synthèse. Il ne remplace ni une analyse de sang ni l'avis d'un professionnel de santé.
Corrections du modèle
Un modèle qui n'a jamais changé est un modèle que personne n'a vérifié. Voici ses corrections.

L'estimateur d'UV précédent surestimait de 3 à 4 fois lorsque le soleil était bas, parce qu'il ignorait l'ozone. La conséquence était grave et publiée : le site affirmait qu'à Boston, New York, Madrid, Chicago et Toronto la vitamine D se synthétise douze mois par an, contredisant Webb, Kline et Holick (1988). Il a été remplacé par Madronich avec l'ozone de van Heuklon, et 51 des 73 villes ont cessé de figurer comme « toute l'année ».
